Coldwater
is located at the junction of U.S. Route 27 and U.S. Route 12 in south central Michigan. It serves as the county seat for Branch County and has some of the best turn-of-the-20th-century architecture found anywhere in the country. Tourism is popular in Coldwater, largely due to the great number of lakes in the area. There is the Messenger-Hodunk 7-Mile Lake Chain, with four of the seven lakes bordering part of the city of Coldwater. Nearby is the Coldwater Lake Chain consisting of 10 lakes with connecting channels. Recreational activities include swimming, fishing and boating, hiking and camping. There are several places to rent boats or you can fish off the dock for bass, walleye, panfish, bluegill, red ear or perch. In addition, there is an Olympic size swimming pool, miniature golf and tennis courts in town, and an 18-hole golf course is located at the Coldwater Country Club. Shopping is also a treat in Coldwater where you’ll find three large antique malls, prime outlet malls, and specialty shops like Northwood’s Coffee Company, the Sauk Trail Trading Post, The Museum Gallery and Soul Selections. Other things to see and do here include the famous Tibbits Opera House, the Wing House Museum, steam engine rides at the Little River Railroad and a full calendar of festivals, special events and shows throughout the year.

Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
