Mecosta
is located in northern Michigan’s “Big Rapids” region. You will find this area of the state has everything for those looking to get away from it all and experience nature. Due to its central location between many of the county’s major lakes, marshes, streams and the Muskegon River, Mecosta has become a prime tourist spot in recent years. The winding Muskegon River is perfect for canoeing, tubing and kayaking, and the beautiful rolling hills, hardwood forests, creeks and wetlands make for an unforgettable hiking or biking experience. There are numerous lakes for swimming, fishing and boating, golf courses, horseback riding and an abundance of campgrounds near Mecosta, both primitive and modern. And, not just a summer recreational site, Mecosta also has Autumn color tours, and snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, sledding and ice skating in wintertime. Mecosta also holds a number of special events and festivals throughout the year, including a 4th of July Freedom Festival, Big Rapids River Days, in August, and an annual Labor Day Arts & Crafts Festival.

Michigan enjoys four distinct seasons and there is a saying that goes, "if you don%u2019t like the weather, wait a day and it will change.%u201D This is because the state is nearly surrounded by water, and the climate is influenced both by warm, humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cold, dry air from the Arctic. The central region of the Lower Peninsula has warm summers with precipitation in the form of showers and thunderstorms. The climate is somewhat influenced by a %u201Clake effect,%u201D which helps keep temperatures mild during the summer and increases the moisture content in the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses as snow as it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfalls in some areas, known as "snow squalls" on the downwind shores of the lakes. Showers and thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer, and fall is often the sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
