Petoskey
is located on the shores of Little Traverse Bay in northwest Michigan. The town of Petoskey features all the accommodations of a big city, with unique shopping and small town appeal. It is probably most well known for its “Gaslight Shopping District,” a six-square-block area with more than 70 craft shops, art galleries and specialty shops. Many of the stores are in buildings with well-kept Victorian facades and the streets are lined with old-fashioned gaslights. Pennsylvania Park is directly across the street from the shopping district, and the waterfront area in Petoskey is a very pleasant place to bring the whole family. Petoskey State Park is a 304-acre park with two large modern campgrounds, and its’ rolling dunes and clear water make a great place to relax and enjoy the beach. There is also a playground; a one-mile long beach and picnic area with grills for day use in the State Park. Bayfront Park provides a full service marina, a historical museum and a “stair tower” that you can climb for a fantastic view of Little Traverse Bay. Petoskey is also home to several special events throughout the season, such as the Little Traverse Bay Historical Festival and the popular Sidewalk Days. In winter, the Petoskey Winter Sports Park provides a ski hill, a hill for sledding, and ice hockey rink and a large outdoor skating rink. The city also holds an annual Winter Carnival, usually held in February.

The Great Lakes dominate northern Michigan%u2019s weather. What is known as %u201Clake effect snow squalls%u201D bring locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan, with the southwest receiving much less snow. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lakes chills the air near the Earth%u2019s surface, producing a stable atmosphere. The Lakes also modify summer high temperatures, making the northern parts of the state a popular vacation spot. Summer temperatures are typically in the upper 70s to lower 80s, with cool nights. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. The luminous phenomenon known as the Northern Lights is usually visible from northern Michigan 30 nights per year, most commonly in March, April, September and October.
