Diamond Lake is the largest lake in southwest Michigan (on the Lower Peninsula.) It is located approximately 30 minutes to Notre Dame and about two hours from Chicago. This is near the Michigan Wine Country, and about ten minutes to the Swiss Valley Ski Area. Diamond Lake is over 1,000 acres and offers sandy beaches for swimming, a marina and public boat launch for fishing and boating, hiking and biking trails around the lake and a golf course. Nearly sixty percent of the lake is less than ten feet deep, with the deepest portion reaching 64 feet. Around the surround the shoreline of the lake are many homes and cottages, and an occupied island, about 43 acres in size, sits in the center of the lake. This island is accessible by ferry, but only by residents. Golf, hunting and camping are also located in the area. Diamond Lake is situated just southeast of the village of Cassopolis. This pretty, historical little town has a nice downtown area with antique shops and restaurants and provides visitors to Diamond Lake with other services and shopping needs.

The southern region of Michigan%u2019s Lower Peninsula has four seasons and due to its location near the Great Lakes, it does experience lake effect, such as increased cloudiness during late fall and early winter. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. The Great Lakes also act as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
