The Great Lakes dominate northern Michigan's weather. What is known as "lake effect snow squalls" bring locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan, with the southwest receiving much less snow. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lakes chills the air near the Earth's surface, producing a stable atmosphere. The Lakes also modify summer high temperatures, making the northern parts of the state a popular vacation spot. Summer temperatures are typically in the upper 70s to lower 80s, with cool nights. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. The luminous phenomenon known as the Northern Lights is usually visible from northern Michigan 30 nights per year, most commonly in March, April, September and October.
