Mancelona
is a small village located in the northern region of the state near the city of Gaylord in beautiful Antrim County. Marked by natural attractions left by the glaciers of thousands of years ago, this area has deep rivers and valleys, breathtaking views, two extensive watersheds and numerous “kettle holes,” which are small lakes carved out of the land after the huge blocks of ice melted. The Mancelona area is a rockhound’s dream, as well as for those who enjoy photography and wildlife viewing. The town of Mancelona is also known for two annual events – the Bass Festival in spring and the White Pine Stampede in January, which draws cross-country skiers from around the world. Fishing and hiking are available at nearby Green and Hawk Lakes, and other area activities include boating, canoeing, swimming, golf, camping, horseback riding, skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, nature walks and bird watching. The Grass River Natural Area, just northwest of Mancelona, has 14 lakes and rivers within its’ 1100 acres, as well as hiking trails that include a 1 ½ mile handicap accessible boardwalk trail system. Other area attractions include the National Fish Hatchery on the Jordan River, Deadman’s Hill Scenic Overlook, the Jordan River Valley Scenic Drive and Cedar Bend, which is a 120-acre farmsite that is an educational retreat center for teaching early American values and a simple lifestyle.

Four distinct seasons with a lake effect that is quite strong during much of the year describes the climate of the northern region of Michigan%u2019s Lower Peninsula. The lake effect increases cloudiness and snowfall during late fall and winter, and also modifies the temperatures %u2013 keeping them cooler in the summer. The weather in the Great Lakes region is known for being very changeable. An old saying goes, %u201CIf you don%u2019t like the weather, wait a day and it will change.%u201D The %u201CChain of Lakes Region%u201D in northwest Michigan sees a lot of moisture throughout the year in the form of showers and thunderstorms during the summer and snow and ice during the winter. In winter, the humidity from the lake condenses as snow when it reaches land, creating quite heavy snowfalls in some areas. During the winter, the temperature of the lakes continues to drop, and ice sometimes covers portions of the lakes. Summers are warm, but periods of extreme heat and humidity are infrequent.
