Torch Lake has been ranked by National Geographic as “the third most beautiful lake in the world.” At 18 miles long, it is Michigan’s longest lake, and is the state’s second largest lake, covering an area of 29 square miles. Torch Lake is located in northwestern Michigan’s lower peninsula in what is referred to as the area’s “chain of lakes” region. Many lakes and rivers run through the rolling hills from the town of Bellaire to Elk Rapids. One of the things that makes Torch Lake so beautiful is its’ unusual color – a mixture of pastel green, blue and turquoise. Some have called it a “Caribbean Blue.” The Torch Lake area abounds with recreational opportunities such as swimming, boating, sailing, kayaking, hiking and biking, and much, much more. The average depth of Torch Lake is over 200 feet, making it a good habitat for trout and a great fishing lake. Other species in the lake are rock bass, yellow perch, small mouth bass, lake trout, brown and rainbow trout. Just three miles from Torch Lake is the quaint town of Alden with shopping and restaurants, and the larger cities of Traverse City, Charlevoix, Gaylord and Petosky are thirty minutes to an hour away.

Four distinct seasons with a lake effect that is quite strong during much of the year describes the climate of the northern region of Michigan%u2019s Lower Peninsula. The lake effect increases cloudiness and snowfall during late fall and winter, and also modifies the temperatures %u2013 keeping them cooler in the summer. The weather in the Great Lakes region is known for being very changeable. An old saying goes, %u201CIf you don%u2019t like the weather, wait a day and it will change.%u201D The %u201CChain of Lakes Region%u201D in northwest Michigan sees a lot of moisture throughout the year in the form of showers and thunderstorms during the summer and snow and ice during the winter. In winter, the humidity from the lake condenses as snow when it reaches land, creating quite heavy snowfalls in some areas. During the winter, the temperature of the lakes continues to drop, and ice sometimes covers portions of the lakes. Summers are warm, but periods of extreme heat and humidity are infrequent.
