Elk Rapids
is a lovely town in Antrim County, ideally located at the mouth of the “Chain of Lakes” and is known as a premier vacation spot for “Up North” residents who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the cities. Elk Rapids sits at the entrance to the docks of Grace Memorial Harbor, which is one of the largest harbors on Grand Traverse Bay and contains over 200 slips. Visitors enjoy walking along the shores of the bay where they can view the large variety of watercraft along the docks. And, the sandy beaches along the Elk Rapids waterways attract swimmers, sunbathers and boaters. The town is also just minutes from several beautiful golf courses and the hiking and biking trails of Williamsburg. Wintertime brings cross-country skiing and snowmobile enthusiasts to Elk Rapids, and there are two new public ice rinks in the downtown district. Elk Rapids Village offers visitors a slow pace and unique shops and restaurants to explore, as well as a wide variety of lodging choices. Also, another interesting place to visit while in Elk Rapids is the Guntzviller’s Spirit of the Woods Museum, which features American Indian artifacts and dioramas of North American mammals and fish.

Four distinct seasons with a lake effect that is quite strong during much of the year describes the climate of the northern region of Michigan%u2019s Lower Peninsula. The lake effect increases cloudiness and snowfall during late fall and winter, and also modifies the temperatures %u2013 keeping them cooler in the summer. The weather in the Great Lakes region is known for being very changeable. An old saying goes, %u201CIf you don%u2019t like the weather, wait a day and it will change.%u201D The %u201CChain of Lakes Region%u201D in northwest Michigan sees a lot of moisture throughout the year in the form of showers and thunderstorms during the summer and snow and ice during the winter. In winter, the humidity from the lake condenses as snow when it reaches land, creating quite heavy snowfalls in some areas. During the winter, the temperature of the lakes continues to drop, and ice sometimes covers portions of the lakes. Summers are warm, but periods of extreme heat and humidity are infrequent.
