Spider-Lake
is a 450-acre "all-sports" lake located in Lower Michigan about twenty minutes southeast of Traverse City. The lake has fishing for bass, bluegill, perch, pike and crappie, and motorboats are allowed with a speed limit enforced from 7:30 P.M. to 11:00 A.M. Other area activities include hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, swimming, water and jet skiing, golf, parasailing, windsurfing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. Just a short drive takes you to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, which is a stunning expanse of beach, water and sand dunes. The North Manitou and South Manitou Islands are located a few miles offshore, and are accessible by ferry from the city of Leland. Both islands are popular backpacking spots. To the north of Spider Lake is the Old Mission Peninsula, with its' beautiful cherry orchard studded hills and internationally known wine-growing region. Other points of interest near Spider Lake are the Spirit of the Woods Museum, the Dennos Museum Center and the village of Interlochen. The latter is home to the famous Interlochen Center for the Arts, which includes a summer arts camp, two large outdoor concert halls, an art gallery and a theater. Clinch Park, situated along Traverse Bay's beachfront, includes a zoo and an aquarium. All of this, and more, combines to make the Spider Lake/Traverse City region one of Michigan's most popular vacation resort areas.

The lake effect is quite strong on the northwest area of Lower Michigan near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. This area has a distinct four-season climate, although Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer, and warmer during late fall and winter. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September, receiving an average of 17.45 inches of rain during that time. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from season to season.
