Elk-Lake is a resort lake that is part of the "Chain of Lakes" (or "Chain 'O Lakes") located in northwest Michigan. This particular lake is about 12 miles northeast of Traverse City, and measures 9 miles long and 2 miles wide. It drains into the east arm of Grand Traverse Bay through the Elk River. Whitewater Township Park is located at Elk Lake and includes two boat ramps and a loading dock, and will accommodate almost any size boat. Game fish found in the lake includes trout, rock bass, yellow perch, small mouth bass, northern pike, rainbow trout and whitefish. Elk Lake is situated at the lower end of the Chain of Lakes, where visitors can boat through over 30 miles of navigable waters that features several bodies of water including Lake Skegemog, Clam Lake, Lake Bellaire. St. Clair Lake and Six Mile Lake are included in the upper portion of the Chain 'O Lakes. Other nearby activities include golf, hiking, biking, tennis, horseback riding and cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. The nearby town of Elk Rapids sits at the entrance of Grace Memorial Harbor, which is one of the largest harbors on Grand Traverse Bay. This bustling city offers a wide variety of lodging choices, along with unique shops and restaurants. A visit to the Guntzviller's Spirit of the Woods Museum, which features American Indian artifacts, is a worthwhile activity on rainy days.
