Old Mission
is a small community located on the northern tip of Old Mission Peninsula in Grand Traverse Bay, Northern Michigan. This is a fascinating place that is an internationally known wine producing region. Interestingly, the lake effect snows protect the vines from northern Michigan’s icy winters. Winter also brings lots of outdoor fun to the Old Mission Peninsula in the way of cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding and ice-skating. In January and February, many of the local wineries and bed & breakfasts in the area host “Wine, Ski and B&B Weekends,” with skiing, wine tasting and gourmet food sampling. Old Mission is definitely a four-season tourist resort area. Springtime brings blossoming cherry trees and the annual weekend-long “Blossom Days Celebration” to the Peninsula. In the summertime, there are farmer’s markets and “pick your own” cherries, peaches, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. Recreational activities are abundant and include swimming, hiking, fishing, boating, sailing, picnicking and biking. Autumn is no less special with its’ Fall Color Tours, roadside pumpkin stands and apple harvests. Just a few of the other points of interest on the Peninsula include the Old Mission Tavern, General Store, Hooper’s Farm Market and the Old Mission Inn.

Four distinct seasons with a lake effect that is quite strong during much of the year describes the climate of the northern region of Michigan%u2019s Lower Peninsula. The lake effect increases cloudiness and snowfall during late fall and winter, and also modifies the temperatures %u2013 keeping them cooler in the summer. The weather in the Great Lakes region is known for being very changeable. An old saying goes, %u201CIf you don%u2019t like the weather, wait a day and it will change.%u201D The %u201CChain of Lakes Region%u201D in northwest Michigan sees a lot of moisture throughout the year in the form of showers and thunderstorms during the summer and snow and ice during the winter. In winter, the humidity from the lake condenses as snow when it reaches land, creating quite heavy snowfalls in some areas. During the winter, the temperature of the lakes continues to drop, and ice sometimes covers portions of the lakes. Summers are warm, but periods of extreme heat and humidity are infrequent.
