Gun Lake
is centrally located in southwest Michigan in the heart of the Yankee Springs Recreation Area. This beautiful 2600-acre lake is near most of the major Michigan metropolitan areas, and just a three-hour drive from both Chicago and Detroit. Yankee Springs Recreation Area has 15,000 acres of hiking, biking and horseback riding trails through thick woods and unique landscape. It is, perhaps, the most visited of the area’s mountain biking options. The northern stretches of Yankee Springs takes bikers up and down over sometimes-rugged terrain, making it a challenging and exhilarating ride. Swimming, boating and fishing and other water sports are also available on Gun Lake or on one of the other 300 lakes located in the area. You can canoe or kayak down the Thornapple River, and more than ten golf courses are within a short drive of the lake. Quaint villages and historic communities dot the landscape surrounding Gun Lake, and offer antiques and specialty shops, restaurants featuring delicious home cooking, and historic attractions and old-time festivals. Bowen’s Mill, near Gun Lake, is an authentic, fully operational 1800s mill that today produces apple cider. Car lovers will enjoy the Gilmore Classic Car Museum, and the Charlton Park and Village Museum and Recreation Area is a must see for history buffs.

Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest, except that it experiences some lake effect conditions due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
