Grand Rapids
is Michigan’s second largest city, and it lies along the banks of the Grand River between the towns of Muskegon and Lansing. Always on the cutting edge of design, Grand Rapids has a unique history in furniture design and manufacturing. Known as “The Paris of Furniture Design,” and “The Furniture City,” you can experience the city’s esthetic qualities with a Downtown Walking Tour, or a Heritage Hill Driving Tour. Grand Rapids is beautiful anytime of the year with its setting along the riverfront against a backdrop of rolling green hills and woodlands. Aside from the usual river activities such as fishing, swimming, kayaking and canoeing, a nice way to spend a day in Grand Rapids is with a riverboat cruise. Several are offered in the city, including lunch and dinner cruises, and the Star of Saugatuck, which is an authentic sternwheeler paddleboat that offers narrated cruises on the Kalamazoo River and Lake Michigan. More than a dozen golf courses are located in and around Grand Rapids, and the Cannonsburg Ski Area is just a short drive away. Other places of interest in the city of Grand Rapids include the John Ball Park Zoo, one of the largest zoos in the state, and Rosa Parks Circle, which is a strikingly beautiful park designed by internationally known artist, Maya Lin. Free outdoor concerts are given in the park in summer, and free ice skate rentals are available in the winter.

Lake Michigan dominates southwest Michigan%u2019s weather. What is known as %u201Clake effect snow squalls%u201D brings locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan, with the southwest receiving much less snow than areas further north. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lake chills the air near the Earth%u2019s surface, producing a stable atmosphere. The Lake also helps modify summer high temperatures, making the northern parts of the state a popular vacation spot. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. Although the Upper Peninsula is cooler, the temperature ranges in the far northern and far southern cities do not differ excessively Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
