Holland is a unique city that is nestled along Lake Macatawa, which is an inland lake behind the sand dunes along Lake Michigan's eastern shore. Holland was originally a Dutch immigrant settlement, and it celebrates its Dutch heritage with windmills, wooden shoe factories and an annual tulip festival. Holland was named an "All-American City," in 1996 by the National Civic League, and extends a genuine hospitality and friendliness to its nearly two and a half million visitors each year. They come for the beaches and parks that offer endless swimming, boating, hiking, bicycle tours, golf and other outdoor activities. Nearby Lake Michigan's sandy beaches and towering sand dunes can be accessed at Tunnel Park, Holland State Park or the Dunes State Park. The "Big Red" Lighthouse is across the Holland channel at Holland State Park, and visitors can walk the boardwalk to the north pier to view the lighthouse. Shopping is also a unique experience in Holland's farm markets and its Victorian styled downtown area, the Dutch Village Shopping Mall, and various antiques shops and mall. Restaurants range from quaint cafes and family-style restaurants to fine dining. The world famous Tulip Time Festival is usually held each May, when more than six million tulips burst into bloom and light up the town just in time for the celebration. Holland also holds an annual Dutch Winterfest, which is a two-week fun-filled celebration that starts with a European Lantern Parade and continues with dozens of holiday events. Other attractions in Holland include the Dutch Village Theme Park, Windmill Island, Cappon House Museum and Settler's House and the DeGraaf Nature Center.

Holland Weather & Climate

Southwest Michigan has four seasons that are greatly influenced by Lake Michigan. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the lake chills the air near the Earth's surface, producing a stable atmosphere. The lake also helps modify summer high temperatures, making the state a popular vacation spot. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. Although the Upper Peninsula is cooler, the temperature ranges in the far northern and far southern cities do not differ excessively in Michigan. What is known as lake effect snow squalls brings locally heavy snows to the area. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
