Norton Shores
is a new city, chartered in 1968, that includes 24.5 square miles on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, just south of the city of Muskegon in the southwest region of the state. Two inland lakes, a state park and several city parks are located in Norton Shores and wooded sand dunes make up the western boundary of the town. The city of Norton Shores has a population of 22,527 residents and it’s home to the area’s international airport, easily accessed by U.S. 31 and Interstate 96. Norton Shores has more than six miles of Lake Michigan shoreline plus numerous public access points on Mona Lake and Black Lake. Hoffmaster State Park, one of the most beautiful parks in Michigan, is located here and has wooded campsites, plus beautiful beaches and dunes for hiking and family enjoyment. The acclaimed Gillette Nature Center located within the park offers unique educational opportunities. Several city parks, including three located on Mona Lake, offer additional recreational activities. Norton Shores is also well known for its’ spectacular annual air show held each summer, usually the third weekend in July.

West-Southwest Michigan on the Lower Peninsula has four seasons where summers are warm with cool nights and winters are cold with snow. Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer and warmer during late fall and winter than in other parts of the Midwest. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from winter to winter.
