Muskegon
is a bustling tourist community in the West-Southwest region of the state, northwest of Grand Rapids. It sits on the shores of the Muskegon River near Lake Michigan and offers several beautiful beaches for swimming, sunning, and beachcombing. Boating and fishing are also very popular here, and several marinas on Muskegon Lake provide boat services, slips, moorings and fuel. You can cruise Muskegon Lake or Lake Michigan aboard the Port City Princess, or tour the historic Milwaukee Clipper or U.S.S. Silversides. Many state parks in the Muskegon area offer hiking, biking, horseback riding and camping. Visitors can get a good look at the area by taking Muskegon’s trolley which goes to the Muskegon Mall, and many of the area beaches, state parks and amusement centers. You can also take a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride to and from the downtown marinas, shops, restaurants and the convention center. Other points of interest in Muskegon include the Hackley and Hume Historic Site, the Muskegon Museum of Art and the Frauenthal Theater. Great Lakes Downs is Muskegon’s thoroughbred racetrack and a popular amusement and water park features the Shivering Timbers, Michigan’s biggest wooden roller coaster.

West-Southwest Michigan on the Lower Peninsula has four seasons where summers are warm with cool nights and winters are cold with snow. Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer and warmer during late fall and winter than in other parts of the Midwest. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from winter to winter.
