Grand Haven
is a major tourist town that sits along the banks of the Grand River and the picturesque shoreline of Lake Michigan in northern Ottawa County. Here’s just a sample of what you’ll find in Grand Haven: a beautiful waterfront that stretches from downtown to the Grand Haven Lighthouse. Established in 1839, the lighthouse has two lights on the south pier, both painted red, that are connected by a lighted catwalk that also connects them to the shore and the Boardwalk. The Boardwalk is two and a half miles along the harbor that is lined with great little shops, restaurants and a marina. It’s a nice place to spend an afternoon walking, shopping and people and boat watching, or you can charter a boat for a day of fishing on Lake Michigan. Fishing is also available off the pier, and other activities in Grand Haven include swimming, hiking, biking, or just hanging out at one of the beautiful beaches that stretch along the West Michigan shoreline. Grand Haven is known for its’ “singing sands,” a phenomenon that occurs only on the Lake Michigan beaches along West Michigan. When walking on the sand, it makes slight “utterings” and “squeaks” beneath your feet, similar to “singing.” And, if you are visiting Grand Haven in December, not to be missed is their “Classic Christmas Celebration,” with their gaily-lighted streets, Christmas parade and tree lighting and classic homes tour.

West-Southwest Michigan on the Lower Peninsula has four seasons where summers are warm with cool nights and winters are cold with snow. Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer and warmer during late fall and winter than in other parts of the Midwest. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from winter to winter.
