Saugatuck , which means “river’s mouth” in Native American is a quaint artists colony with magnificent beaches and lakeshore inns. Artists from around the world are drawn to Saugatuck’s natural beauty and unspoiled beaches, towering sand dunes, picturesque waterfront and harbor. And, with its location along the Kalamazoo River, Saugatuck has several marinas and boat charters that line the shores where visitors can observe sailboats, pontoon boats, yachts and fishing boats moving up and down the river to Lake Michigan. You can tour the harbor on an old-fashioned sternwheeler, rent a canoe, go boating and fishing, kayaking, explore the beaches and sand dunes or picnic in Wicks Park in a gazebo that looks out over the harbor. Saugatuck’s Oval Beach has been rated by Conde Naste’s Traveler Magazine as one of the “25 best shorelines in the world,” and MTV has ranked it as one of the top five beaches in the country. Saugatuck Dunes State Park has over 1,000 acres of rugged dunes, with both groomed and ungroomed trails for hiking and cross-country skiing. Fall color tours can be enjoyed by car or by bicycle. And, as the fall leaves drop along with the temperature, Saugatuck decks itself out by covering downtown with more than 500,000 twinkling holiday lights, which become the backdrop for a festive parade. On weekends, horse-drawn carriage rides are available along this scenic route. While in downtown Saugatuck, take time to explore the shops, boutiques, restaurants and more than 20 art galleries that line the boardwalk, and discover the charm that keeps visitors coming here time and again. The Saugatuck area is also known as the “Bed & Breakfast Capital of the Midwest,” but if you prefer, there are also many hotels, cottages and budget inns in the area.

Saugatuck Weather & Climate

Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest, except that it experiences some lake effect conditions due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
