Covert is located along Highway 140 in Van Buren County, between South Haven and St. Joseph, near Paw Paw Lake and Lake Michigan. Van Buren County is filled with things to see and do, from wineries and vineyards, to inland lakes and sandy beaches. Water activities top the list, and families visiting Covert can enjoy four public beaches, including one right in Covert Township Park. The others are found at Van Buren State Park, South Haven’s North Beach and South Haven’s South Beach. Choose from swimming, water skiing, boating, fishing, sand volleyball and beachcombing. In wintertime, you can downhill ski or snowboard at Timber Ridge Ski Resort, and go cross-country skiing at various locations near Covert. Kal-Haven Trail Sesquicentennial State Park in Van Buren County offers 40 miles of trails for biking, and even more challenging rides are available at Van Buren State Park. Other things to do near the town of Covert include hunting, camping and golf. Michigan’s oldest and largest winery is located here – and is open for tours, while farmers markets brimming with fresh produce, blueberries, raspberries and apples are located all up and down the Michigan coast. For racing fans, the Gingerman Raceway and Hartford Speedway are located in Van Buren County near Covert.

Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest, except that it experiences some lake effect conditions due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
