Coloma is located in southwest Michigan, west of Kalamazoo near Paw Paw Lake and Lake Michigan. Originally called “Shingle Diggins” because of its’ early business making wooden shingles that were sent down the river to sell in St. Joseph, Michigan, it also became a stage coach stop in the 1840s. Weary travelers riding from St. Joseph to Paw Paw could buy a hot meal and rent a room at the Osgood House, and shop at the general store. As paper money was scarce, shoppers would trade or “dicker” with the storeowner for purchases, and eventually the name of the town was changed to “Dickerville.” When a post office was assigned to the town, one of the town’s residents recalled stories of the California Gold Rush of 1849 and how her father compared Dickerville to Coloma, California – and thus the new name of the town was born. In the late 1800s, Coloma saw a “gold rush” of its’ own – in the way of tourists coming to escape the heat, wind and noise of Chicago to rest along the shores of nearby Paw Paw Lake. Today, tourism continues to play a large part in Coloma’s growth. The town is popular for its’ swimming, fishing and boating on Paw Paw Lake, and hiking, biking and other sports are also available in the area. Nearby Attractions include Deer Forest Fun Park, southwest Michigan’s largest animal and amusement park where visitors can pet and feed deer, ride a camel and enjoy amusement rides.

Located near the shores of Lake Michigan, the climate is also influenced by the lake effect, which helps keep temperatures mild during the summer and increases the moisture content in the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses as snow as it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfalls in some areas, known as "snow squalls" on the downwind shores of the lakes. Showers and thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer, and fall is often the sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
