Fennville
is located in the southwest region of the state, right along Highway 89, between the towns of Holland and Kalamazoo. It is also just a seven-mile drive east of Lake Michigan. Fennville began as a mill town in 1862, and today is an agricultural community nestled amid peaceful farms and picturesque orchards. It’s known as “Goosetown,” due to the many Canadian Geese that make Fennville their home at the State Game Area just south of town, and an annual Goose Festival is held here each year during the third weekend in October. Recreational activities in the area include fishing, boating, hiking, biking and golf, cross country skiing and snowmobiling. Plus, Fennville is just minutes to Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, and the artists’ communities of Saugatuck and Douglas. Lots of local fairs and festivals are held throughout the year in the surrounding towns, like the Holland Tulip Festival and the Blueberry Festival in South Haven. The community of Saugatuck offers activities all year long, including monthly arts and crafts fairs. Other points of interest near Fennville include a huge antiques show at the Allegan Fair Grounds on the last Sunday of each month in April through September, also the Allegan County Fair in September and Keewatin Nautical Museum.

Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest, except that it experiences some lake effect conditions due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
