Hesperia
is a village of under 1,000 residents, located on the boundary of Oceana and Newaygo Counties on Michigans Lower Peninsula. About half of the village is in Newfield Township in Oceana County and half in Denver Township in Newaygo County. This pretty little community is situated along the White River, which flows on the north end of town, and is complete with a dam, mill pond and swimming area. Other activities on the river include canoeing and fishing. The White River is excellent for trout fishing in spring and salmon fishing in the fall. Tourism plays a major role in this area. Oceana County (located about halfway up the state on Lake Michigans shoreline,) is known as the asparagus capital of the world. It also has the second largest fruit tree acreage in Michigan. The Little Sauble Point area and Silver Lake sand dunes is one of the few places in the country that offer dune schooner rides to view the pristine coastline along Lake Michigan. In Newaygo County, the Muskegon River is a major summer attraction – especially for its fishing opportunities. Over half of Newaygo County is inside the Manistee National Forest, which offers many other recreational opportunities. Hesperia is approximately 45 miles northwest of Grand Rapids.

West-Southwest Michigan on the Lower Peninsula has four seasons where summers are warm with cool nights and winters are cold with snow. Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer and warmer during late fall and winter than in other parts of the Midwest. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don't last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from winter to winter.
