Saranac
is a small town of approximately 1,300 located in Ionia County, Lower Michigan, between the cities of Lansing and Grand Rapids. This community has an appealing small-town atmosphere, with many locally owned shops and restaurants. One of the main attractions in town (especially for railroad buffs,) is the Grand Trunk Depot Museum on the north side of town, open from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and featuring a 100-year-old Dutch-style, woodside caboose. Saranac is near the Ionia State Recreation Area, which offers visitors endless recreational opportunities. This state park includes 4,500 acres of flat lands and rolling hills, open meadows, forested ridges, brooks and streams and a lake. Wetlands and wildflowers dot the park, and birding is a popular activity (the Audubon Society has identified 199 species in the area.) Other activities include fishing and hunting, swimming, boating, hiking, mountain biking, and camping, horseback riding and cross country skiing. There are even metal detecting areas of the park, open to the public. The 3.5 miles of hiking trails within the park meander through woods and meadows, and past streams, lake shore and river bottom. Sessions Lake and The Grand River provide both shore and boat fishing, with stream fishing available on Sessions Creek and Tibbits Creek. Sessions Lake is a 140-acre, man made lake that is stocked with Bluegill, Walleye, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Channel Catfish and Crappie. There is a “no-wake” speed restriction on the lake, and a beach house and clothes changing area is available in the swimming areas.

Lake Michigan dominates southwest Michigan%u2019s weather. What is known as %u201Clake effect snow squalls%u201D brings locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan, with the southwest receiving much less snow than areas further north. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lake chills the air near the Earth%u2019s surface, producing a stable atmosphere. The Lake also helps modify summer high temperatures, making the northern parts of the state a popular vacation spot. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. Although the Upper Peninsula is cooler, the temperature ranges in the far northern and far southern cities do not differ excessively Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
