Houghton-Lake
is a small village located on the southern shore of Houghton Lake in northern Michigan. The town of Houghton Lake and the surrounding area is considered the "gateway" to northern Michigan's outdoor recreation and resort towns. Houghton Lake itself offers lots of year round activities such as swimming, fishing and boating, hiking, biking and golf. November is hunting season and this region is one of Michigan's prime deer hunting areas. In winter there is skiing at nearby Gaylord and Grayling, and snowshoeing and snowmobiling just about anywhere. Houghton Lake is also home to the annual Tip-Up Town U.S.A. Fishing Festival for ice fishing enthusiasts. With more than thirty-one square miles of surface, Houghton Lake is Michigan's largest inland lake, and it is well known for its excellent fishing. The lake is full of panfish, pike and walleye, with some of the best places to fish being near the shore. The towns of Houghton Lake and Prudenville have been family vacation destinations for years, and several hotels, motels and cabins circle the lake The village also has shops and restaurants, and there are nearby resorts that cater to the needs of tourists. And just north of Houghton Lake, at Higgins Lake, are two huge state park campgrounds that are open year round.

Houghton Lake Weather & Climate

The Great Lakes dominate northern Michigan's weather. What is known as "lake effect snow squalls" bring locally heavy snow to northern and western Michigan, with the southwest receiving much less snow. Summers tend to be sunny as the cool water of the Lakes chills the air near the Earth's surface, producing a stable atmosphere. The Lakes also modify summer high temperatures, making the northern parts of the state a popular vacation spot. Summer temperatures are typically in the upper 70s to lower 80s, with cool nights. Autumn is too cool for swimming, but is a great time for other outdoor attractions. The luminous phenomenon known as the Northern Lights is usually visible from northern Michigan 30 nights per year, most commonly in March, April, September and October.
