Thompsonville
is a tiny town located on the banks of the Benzie River near Green Lake in northern Michigan. This quiet community draws its share of tourists nationwide who are heading for the Crystal Mountain Resort Area just north of town along Highway 115. The resort is open year round with golf in the summer and skiing in the winter, and it caters to families by providing day-care and a great children’s “learn to ski” program. There are 36 holes of golf, 34 downhill slopes and over 40 km of cross-country ski trails, groomed for both track and skate skiing. Thompsonville is only fifteen miles to Lake Michigan and is near the Grand Traverse Bay cities of Traverse City, Suttons Bay, Frankfort and Northport. There is never a shortage of activities in this area, from outdoors recreation to attending one of the many fairs and festivals in the small towns and villages of Benzie and Grand Traverse Counties. You can enjoy charter fishing on Lake Michigan or fly fishing, kayaking or canoeing on nearby rivers and streams. Visit the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and climb the huge sand dunes, or visit the Point Betsie Lighthouse near Frankfort and the wineries along the Leelanau Peninsula. Thompsonville offers the best of both worlds – all the fun and excitement of a world class resort and the quiet charm of a small town community.

The lake effect is quite strong on the northwest area of Lower Michigan near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park. This area has a distinct four-season climate, although Lake Michigan helps modify temperatures, keeping them cooler in late spring and early summer, and warmer during late fall and winter. Showers and thunderstorms are common in spring and summer, and precipitation is generally evenly distributed during the crop season of April through September, receiving an average of 17.45 inches of rain during that time. The lake also acts as a giant humidifier, increasing moisture content in the air throughout the year. However, extremely hot and humid summer days are not that common and don%u2019t last long in this part of the state. Snowfall varies greatly from season to season.
