Algonac is called “The Venice of Michigan.” It’s a small waterfront community located on the tip of the St. Clair Waterway in eastern Michigan, approximately 25 miles southwest of Port Huron. The Algonac State Park is located immediately north of town on the river. During the summer months, Algonac’s harbor is busy with cruisers, sailboats and other personal watercraft, while freighters and ocean liners make their way through the river to the Great Lakes. The city of Algonac also has one of the longest, freshwater boardwalks in the country. Throughout the year, the city is host to several special events. Boating enthusiasts enjoy the Annual Boat Parade, a lively event held at the Algonac Harbour Club, and an Annual Classic Car Show is held in the Riverfront Park. A special 4th of July Celebration in downtown Algonac is complete with rides, food vendors, fishing tournaments, and of course, a fabulous fireworks display that is considered one of the best in the state. The Riverfront Park Gazebo is the site of a free concert series every Thursday during July and August, an annual Art Fair takes place on Labor Day weekend. In September, step back in time at the Algonac State Park, which is turned into a 17th century Re-enactment of a French and Indian Village. This event has drawn rave reviews nationwide. Other recreational activities in the Algonac area include swimming, boating and fishing, hiking, a new skate park, nature walks and wildlife viewing in the marsh area wildlife sanctuary.

Algonac Weather & Climate

Northeast Lower Michigan experiences four distinct seasons. During periods of easterly to northeasterly winds, the air moving over Lake Huron gives this region cooler summers and increased snow activity in late fall and early winter. As a result of prevailing westerly winds, the northeast region also experiences additional lake affect. In late winter, ice builds up on the lakes and temperature variations more closely resemble inland Michigan. This area seldom experiences prolonged periods of hot, humid weather in the summer or extreme cold during the winter. Thunderstorms occur mainly in the summer months. Michigan is located on the northeast fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but has a lower occurrence of them, in part, as a result of the colder water of Lake Michigan during the spring and early summer months.
