Detroit is located in the southeast portion of the state on the banks of the Detroit River, and is the largest city in the state and the 10th largest city in the United States. Called “The Automobile Manufacturing Capital of the World,” it was here that Henry Ford built his first car in 1896, and later devised the moving assembly line that put the world on wheels. Today, the city of Detroit is a diverse and cultural city with much to offer visitors. Some of the exciting attractions include the Detroit Zoo, Great Lakes Crossings, the Motown Museum, the Henry Ford Museum (called America’s Greatest History Attraction) and the Museum of African-American History. It’s also home to the country’s largest island park within a city – Belle Isle Park, which houses the nation’s oldest freshwater aquarium. Greenfield Village in Detroit is a historical museum for families, where 300 years of America’s past comes to life. At the Village, you can ride an authentic Model T, look inside Edison’s Laboratory, attend a historic baseball game, or watch skilled artisans practice their craft. Detroit Tigers fans come to the city to catch a game at Comerica Park. Restaurants in Detroit range from fast food to five stars, plus a plethora of unique specialty stores, an antiques mall, and a 100-store discount mall satisfies all the shopaholics. For outdoor recreation enthusiasts, one of the area’s largest parks is located along the banks of Lake St. Clair and has a great beach for swimming and sunning, plus a swimming pool, hiking trail, miniature golf, canoe rentals and more.

Detroit Weather & Climate

The Southeast Lower region of Michigan has four seasons and due to its location near Lake Huron and Lake Ontario, it does experience lake effect, such as increased cloudiness during late fall and early winter. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. The Great Lakes also act as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southeastern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
