Rochester Hills
is located 23 miles north of Detroit in Oakland County. As of the 2000 census, the city had a population of 68,825 residents. Rochester Hills is home to the prestigious Rochester College and other attractions such as Meadow Brook Hall, Yates Cider Mill and Historic Stoney Creek Village. There are 14 recreational sites located throughout the city, with three major parks – Thelma G. Spencer Park, Borden Park and Bloomer Park. A pedestrian path spans the entire width and breadth of the city and other activities available include swimming, golf, tennis and bicycling. Rochester Hills is also home to the only velodrome in the state of Michigan, with an 1/8th-mile track that is the fastest in the country. The community is well known for its Festival of the Hills, an event that draws nearly 50,000 visitors each year for great music, food, fireworks and more. Nearby, the town of Troy is host to the Magic of Fall/Troy Daze Festival each September. A short drive from Rochester Hills takes you to metro Detroit and attractions such as the Henry Ford Museum & Greenfield Village, the Detroit Zoological Park, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and the Cranbrook House and Gardens.

The Southeast Lower region of Michigan has four seasons and due to its location near Lake Huron and Lake Ontario, it does experience lake effect, such as increased cloudiness during late fall and early winter. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. The Great Lakes also act as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southeastern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
