Newport
is located along Lake Erie at Estral Bay in Monroe County, in the southeast region of the state. It is part of the Detroit metro area, and is situated at the junction of Newport Road and Brandon Road, just off Interstate 75. The neighboring community of Estral Beach is a small summer resort town with cottages located along the inlets and shallow waterways of the coastline area. Estral Beach borders the northern side of Swan Creek, which is an expanded inlet that stretches for three miles inland from the coast to the town of Newport. The Newport/Estral Beach area is ideal for small boats and fishing. Nearby Lake St. Clair is one of the area’s largest parks and is great for swimming, sailing, boating and fishing, and has a hiking trail, miniature golf and canoe rentals. All of the exciting museums and attractions of the Detroit metro area are just a short drive from Newport, such as The Henry Ford Museum, Motown Museum, the Detroit Zoo and Greenfield Village. The city of Detroit is also home to Belle Isle Park, the country’s largest island park within a city and home to one of the country’s oldest freshwater aquariums. The peaceful lakeside town of Newport makes a good base for those wishing to explore southeastern Michigan, without the crowds and hassles of staying in the city.

The southeast lower section of Michigan has four seasons and due to its location near Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, it does experience lake effect, such as increased cloudiness during late fall and early winter. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms, but seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southeastern Michigan. The Great Lakes also act as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. In winter, the lakes act as a natural humidifier, causing an increase in the moisture content in the air, and sometimes along with it, heavier snowfalls. Average snowfall varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
