Monroe sits in the extreme southeastern corner of the state, about halfway between Toledo, Ohio and Detroit. It’s the largest city in Monroe County and the county seat. Monroe began as a French settlement in 1780 and quickly developed into what became known as “Frenchtown,” which was the third major community in Michigan in the year 1815. In 1817, an American community began along the south side of the river, and was named after James Monroe, the 5th president of the United States. Monroe is also known for being the childhood home of General George Armstrong Custer. His statue, erected by the State of Michigan in 1910, stands downtown by the River Raisin. There are many industries here, including auto-parts manufacturing, metal fabrication, cement, packaging and glass production. Monroe County is Michigan’s only county located along the shores of Lake Erie. Boating and fishing are popular in the area and the region features a unique ecology found nowhere else in Michigan, with shallow marshes and inlets that have become a favorite for birdwatchers and duck hunters. Monroe is home to an annual Christmas Tree Festival that runs Wednesday through Sunday during the month of December.

Monroe Weather & Climate

The southeast lower section of Michigan has four seasons and due to its location near Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, it does experience lake effect, such as increased cloudiness during late fall and early winter. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms, but seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southeastern Michigan. The Great Lakes also act as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. In winter, the lakes act as a natural humidifier, causing an increase in the moisture content in the air, and sometimes along with it, heavier snowfalls. Average snowfall varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
