Carp Lake
is a small community located on the western shore of Paradise Lake (which is also sometimes referred to as Carp Lake) in the northern region of the Lower Peninsula. It’s easily reached via U.S. Highway 31 and is near Lake Michigan, just 10 miles south of Mackinaw City. Paradise Lake is a quiet, inland lake that covers 1900 acres and is known for its’ excellent fishing for walleye, rock bass, yellow perch, small and large mouth bass and Northern pike. The Paradise Trail runs through Carp Lake, and many campgrounds and historical sites are located nearby. Carp Lake is also the hub for Wilderness State Park, which offers visitors year round activities within its’ 8,000 acres of hardwood forests, numerous ponds and open meadows. The park has a boat launch and 250 campsites, plus several rustic cabins and bunkhouses, all with electric service. It’s a popular spot for kayaking and boating, and in wintertime for cross-country skiing. There are twelve hiking trails available in Wilderness State Park, ranging from ¼ mile to 5.5 miles. The Park is also open to small and big game hunting in the fall and winter seasons. Carp Lake is just 15 minutes to Sturgeon Bay on Lake Michigan, which has beautiful beaches and sand dunes, and the gorgeous Victorian-era Mackinaw Island is another nearby attraction.

Northern Michigan has four very distinct seasons. Heavy snowfall in winter is common in the northern reaches of the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula. The Great Lakes definitely help moderate winter temperatures, but even so, the average highs in the middle of January are near 10 degrees, while the southern regions of the state see highs in the 20s. The lakeshore breezes help keep temperatures cool on summer days, and most of the time humidity is manageable. Statewide annual precipitation is around 25 inches, with higher amounts in the Upper Peninsula and along Lake Michigan. Fall is often the best time of the year with mild to cool sunny days and crisp, cold nights. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
