Burt Lake
is a ten-mile long lake located in the northern tip of Lower Michigan, joined by streams to Mullett Lake and Crooked Lake. This beautiful lake is in Cheboygan County, which is a forested resort area of the state. Burt Lake State Park is located at the south end of the lake and is within easy walking distance of downtown Indian River. The park is open from April to November (depending on the weather,) and has 2,000 feet of sandy shoreline and over 300 campsites. There is a park store with small rental boats, a beach, picnic areas, beach volleyball, a softball field and a pump-out station. Burt Lake provides visitors with fishing and boating, swimming, sightseeing, and has a one-mile trail for hiking (no bicycles, horses or ORV are allowed on this trail.) Burt Lake is also on Michigan’s “Inland Waterway,” which travels through a chain of lakes and rivers for 38 miles from Crooked Lake to Lake Huron. Fishing is very popular in Burt Lake, especially for walleye, trout, bass, bluegill and perch. There are also many cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails in the Burt Lake region. Other area attractions include the world’s largest “Cross in the Woods,” historic Mackinaw Island and the Pigeon River State Forest. The picturesque village of Cheboygan is nearby and offers shopping and lodging, several marinas, a lighthouse, and a popular beach and drawbridge.

Northern Michigan has four very distinct seasons. Heavy snowfall in winter is common in the northern reaches of the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula. The Great Lakes definitely help moderate winter temperatures, but even so, the average highs in the middle of January are near 10 degrees, while the southern regions of the state see highs in the 20s. The lakeshore breezes help keep temperatures cool on summer days, and most of the time humidity is manageable. Statewide annual precipitation is around 25 inches, with higher amounts in the Upper Peninsula and along Lake Michigan. Fall is often the best time of the year with mild to cool sunny days and crisp, cold nights. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
