Indian River is an upscale resort town located northeast of Traverse City in the northern region of Michigan. Situated in Cheboygan County along Interstate 75, this classy city has lots of shops, restaurants and other businesses that cater to tourists. The Indian River runs through the middle of the town, and Mullett Lake, Burt Lake State Park and the Sturgeon River are also in the near vicinity. Indian River is also known for being home to the world’s largest crucifix, which is located just south of town. Several beaches and parks offer visitors a variety of recreational opportunities. Devoe Beach is just a short walk from the middle of the town and has over 600 feet of sandy beach along the shores of Burt Lake, and also a boardwalk that runs alongside The Indian River. Burt Lake State Park has camping, a nice picnic area, a boat launch and 2000 feet of shoreline. A 2.6 mile nature trail that is also used for cross-country skiing can be found in Cooperation Park, along with a picnic area, tennis courts, basketball court and baseball diamond and horseshoe pits. Other attractions in the Indian River area include the Agnes Andrea Nature Preserve and The Pigeon River State Forest. All types of activities area available in Indian River, including canoeing and kayaking, swimming, fishing and boating and golf. Downhill skiing is available at nearby Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Charlevoix and St. Ignace.

Northern Michigan has four very distinct seasons. Heavy snowfall in winter is common in the northern reaches of the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula. The Great Lakes definitely help moderate winter temperatures, but even so, the average highs in the middle of January are near 10 degrees, while the southern regions of the state see highs in the 20s. The lakeshore breezes help keep temperatures cool on summer days, and most of the time humidity is manageable. Statewide annual precipitation is around 25 inches, with higher amounts in the Upper Peninsula and along Lake Michigan. Fall is often the best time of the year with mild to cool sunny days and crisp, cold nights. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
