Cheboygan
was at one time a major port on the Great Lakes, serving industry and becoming a coast guard station. Today, this small town’s location along the banks of the Cheboygan River near Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Mullett Lake is a major tourist attraction. It is located 16 miles southeast along the coast of Lake Huron from the Mackinac Bridge. It serves as the gateway to a chain of lakes, and is a very popular spot with boaters. Cheboygan has a lighthouse, beach and drawbridge and several marinas, making it a photographer’s delight. Other activities include fishing and hunting, hiking, biking, camping, and golf. Lots of fluffy white snow in wintertime entices visitors to this harbor town for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, ice-skating and ice fishing. Downhill skiing is only a 45-minute drive to Nub’s Nob and Boyne Highlands. Cheboygan has ample lodging choices, shops and restaurants, and is a short distance to all the northern Michigan tourist attractions, including Mackinaw Island.

Northern Michigan has four very distinct seasons. Heavy snowfall in winter is common in the northern reaches of the Lower Peninsula and the Upper Peninsula. The Great Lakes definitely help moderate winter temperatures, but even so, the average highs in the middle of January are near 10 degrees, while the southern regions of the state see highs in the 20s. The lakeshore breezes help keep temperatures cool on summer days, and most of the time humidity is manageable. Statewide annual precipitation is around 25 inches, with higher amounts in the Upper Peninsula and along Lake Michigan. Fall is often the best time of the year with mild to cool sunny days and crisp, cold nights. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
