Paw Paw has a motto, “A town so nice, they named it twice!” Actually, the colorful name comes from the river which flows through the town, which the Potawatomi Indians referred to as “the place where the Paw Paw fruit grows.” Early settlers discovered that the area was also excellent for growing other kinds of fruits – including grapes. Today Paw Paw is best known for its’ vineyards and wineries. It is nestled in the heart of the “Wine Country” of Van Buren County in the southwest region of the state, just west of the city of Kalamazoo. The village has several popular restaurants that draw visitors from miles around, and it also boasts one of the few surviving small town movie theaters in the area. In the center of town is beautiful Maple Lake, which features an outdoor amphitheater, that is the site of many concerts in the summer and fall. Maple Island also offers picnic facilities, a beach and a recreational park. Paw Paw serves as the county seat for Van Buren County. An annual Wine and Harvest Festival is held in the city the first weekend after Labor Day. An easy day trip takes you to the city of Kalamazoo, which has dozens of golf courses, 83 lakes with public access, a vibrant Art Deco downtown area with shopping, fine dining and museums.

Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season climate that is typical of most of the Midwest, except that it experiences some lake effect conditions due to the close proximity of Lake Michigan. Summer precipitation comes in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant "heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters. It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan. Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the country.
