Lakeside is a small town located along the shores of Lake Michigan in the southwest corner of the state, near the Indiana state line. It's situated in Berrien County, which is also known as "The Harbor Country," and along with the village of Lakeside, includes the towns of Michiana, Grand Beach, New Buffalo, Three Oaks, Union Pier, Harbert and Sawyer. Lakeside began as a logging town, but in the early 1920s people from nearby Chicago discovered the quaint, rural, lakeside village and it soon became a popular vacation spot. By the 1980s, Harbor Country became known as "The Hamptons of the Midwest." In fact, at one time, Lakeside was home to some of the most famous Lake Michigan shoreline resorts, where movie stars wined and dined. Lakeside also became a haven for artists who were inspired by the natural beauty and the relaxed, casual atmosphere. It's a very diverse area, with miles of beaches and majestic dunes, woodlands and rolling hills and valleys planted with lush vineyards and award winning wineries. Area attractions include Warren Woods State Preserve and Warren Dunes State Park, which features a campground, hiking trails, and a large beach area and sand dunes. There is an amusement park located near Lakeside that features go-carts and three golf courses can be found just minutes away. Shopping and dining are abundant in the area, where Lakeside offers the peacefulness of a small town combined with the amenities of a big city.
