Union Pier is located on the banks of the Green River near the shore of Lake Michigan and just six miles north of the Indiana/Michigan border in what is known as “Harbor Country.” This tiny village began as a shipping pier when logging and timber were the main industries of the county back in the 1870s. Today, the town is little more than a corner store and ice cream shop, but it is in one of the most desirable resort areas in the state of Michigan. The area surrounding Union Pier is made up of woodsy shoreline, majestic sand dunes, quaint harbor towns, grand old resorts and the beautiful blue waters of Lake Michigan. Three state parks are in the region, all with huge sand dunes some that rise as high as 250 feet. Warren Woods is a primeval forest with hiking trails that follow the winding Galien River, and three of southwestern Michigan’s lighthouses are just a short drive away. The Harbor Country around Union Pier is a four-season resort area filled with small town charm and serenity, yet has all the sophistication of the larger cities. You’ll find great restaurants, boutiques, art galleries, antiques and specialty shops galore. There are local wineries and wine tasting tours, biking trails on country backroads, horseback riding, beach activities, and snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross country skiing and sledding in wintertime. Southwest Michigan enjoys four distinct seasons and there is a saying that goes, %u201Cif you don%u2019t like the weather, wait a day and it will change.%u201D This is because both the warm, humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cold, dry air from the Arctic influence the climate. Located near the shores of Lake Michigan, the climate is also influenced by the lake effect, which helps keep temperatures mild during the summer and increases the moisture content in the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses as snow as it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfalls in some areas, known as "snow squalls" on the downwind shores of the lakes. Showers and thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer, and fall is often the sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
