Sawyer
is the northernmost of the communities that makes up what is known as "Harbor Country," located in the southwest corner of the state along the Lake Michigan shoreline. This peaceful town is home to Warren Dunes, which is one of the largest state parks in Michigan. It offers 1,952 beautiful acres of sand dunes, beaches and campgrounds. The rugged dunes rise 260 feet above the lake and offer incredible views and are great for hang gliding. There are six miles of hiking trails and three miles of shoreline inside Warren Dunes State Park, along with picnic areas with grills, fire pits and tables. A beach house provides a changing area for swimmers and a concession store offers drinks, snacks, clothing and souvenirs. Cross country skiing is available in the park in the wintertime. A large travel center is located just off Interstate 94 in Sawyer with fuel, food and other information for visitors. Other attractions in Sawyer include Deer Forest, the Curious Kids Museum and Captain Mikes Fun Park. Harbor Country is anchored by two major public beaches - Warren Dunes to the north and in New Buffalo in the southern end. They are consistently rated among the top beaches on Lake Michigan, and provide many points of interest in between. The other major towns of Harbor Country include Lakeside, Michiana, Grand Beach, New Buffalo, Three Oaks, Union Pier and Harbert.

Southwest Michigan enjoys four distinct seasons and there is a saying that goes, "if you don't like the weather, wait a day and it will change." This is because both the warm, humid air coming up from the Gulf of Mexico, and cold, dry air from the Arctic influence the climate. Located near the shores of Lake Michigan, the climate is also influenced by the lake effect, which helps keep temperatures mild during the summer and increases the moisture content in the air throughout the year. In the winter, this moisture condenses as snow as it reaches the land, creating heavy snowfalls in some areas, known as "snow squalls" on the downwind shores of the lakes. Showers and thunderstorms are common in the spring and summer, and fall is often the sunniest time of the year in Michigan.
